The Monaco Auctions: racing cars race

The historic car auctions in Monaco saw Bonhams and RM Sotheby's competing for the highest prices. RM Sotheby's outperformed Bonhams, selling 47 out of 64 cars with an average price of €634,734. The event saw many successful sales, including Nigel Mansell's two Formula 1 cars, the Ferrari 640 F1 from 1989 and the Williams FW14, which sold for €3,605,000 and €4,055,000, respectively. The 1969 Alfa Romeo 33/3 was another highlight of the auctions, fetching €1,636,250.

The Lamborghini Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae, the last model to mount a naturally aspirated V12 engine, was sold for $1,603,125 (€1,525,580) at an RM auction. It also came with a series of virtual "accessories," including an NFT with interesting contents and the possibility to use them on the recently launched metaverse.

Worldwide at cruising speed

Worldwide's Auburn auction saw 87.04% of the 54 cars sold, making around $4.4m in total, or roughly $94,522 per car. The 1930 Cadillac V16 Series 452 Roadster was the most expensive car, selling for $758,500, while the second-most expensive was a 1936 Auburn 852SC Boattail Speedster, which went for just $283,750 as it had been rebodied. The 1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster was a mystery sale at $162,400, selling for twice the usual price of similar models. The auction ended with a white over red BMW Z3M Roadster selling for $43,120.

All cheap. But after?

The Anglia Car Auctions in Kings Lynn, England, had a successful auction with 230 cars out of 270 sold for a total of £1,706,419 (€2,032,640). The auction also included some cars being sold for charity, such as a 1983 Audi 100CS which raised £2,754 (€3,310) for the Lennox Children Cancer Fund. A 2004 Bentley Continental GT with electrical problems and tacky modifications failed to reach its estimated price, selling for £9,828 (€11,818). Other interesting cars included a Fiat Seicento Sporting sold for £860 (€1,034), a 2004 Honda S2000 sold for £12,420 (€14,935) and a 1993 Mercedes-Benz SL320 sold for £5,400 (€6,493).

Goodwood. The good choice

Bonhams auction at the 79th Members’ Meeting in Goodwood achieved an 85.14% success rate, selling 63 out of 74 cars on offer for a total of £6,791,025 (€8,193,915). The top lot was a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that needed complete restoration, estimated at £280,000-£350,000 but eventually sold for £506,000 (€610,530). Another highlight was a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Competition Saloon, estimated at £160,000-£200,000 but sold for £235,750 (€286,865). A 1937 SS Jaguar 2 1/2 litre Saloon sold for £35,650 (€43,015) against an estimate of £20,000-£30,000.

Artcurial doubles: another top European auction

Silverstone and Historics: a world of temptations

Two British auctions, Silverstone and Historics, offered a variety of cars to enthusiasts. Silverstone had higher quality cars, with an estimate of £7.5m and sold 62 out of 100 cars, while Historics sold 75.93% of their 162 cars, with an estimate of £4.2m. The top lot was a 2001 Ford Focus WRC model sold at Silverstone for £423,300. At Historics, a 1997 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor was sold for just £2,264, and a Triumph TR5 sold for £75,040, setting a new record. Amelia auctions: pre-wars and supercars

The results of the recent Amelia Island Week auctions by Bonhams and RM Sotheby’s showed varying degrees of success.
