The extraordinary MAUTO Automobile Museum of Turin, a treasure trove that chronicles the entire journey of humankind alongside this invaluable means of transport, is featured in Roarington with its own virtual exhibit featuring two extraordinary cars. This virtual tour offers much more than what’s possible in the real world as it allows visitors to climb aboard the 1952 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante and the 1954 Fiat Turbina.
The Disco Volante played a significant role in automotive history for its exploration of extreme aerodynamics in sports racing cars. At a time when the potential of wing appendages for downforce was yet to be discovered, the primary goal of designers was to achieve the best air penetration coefficient. Ironically, in this case, this aerodynamic pursuit was so extreme it caused the car to lighten during driving, leading to a loss of stability, making the Disco Volante a rare piece in automotive history.
Equally fascinating in Roarington’s virtual MAUTO Showroom is the Fiat Turbina. This unique model was developed during the dawn of the jet age to explore the feasibility of using turbine engines in road or racing cars. Fiat achieved speeds of up to 260 km/h in tests with this stylistic pioneer, but it wasn’t deemed sufficient for practical road use, so the experiment, like those of other manufacturers, remained just an experiment. The Fiat Turbina, like the Disco Volante, is a car that only can be discovered in Turin or, alternatively, in Roarington!
Additionally, these cars have been digitally scanned as exact twins of their real counterparts and are available for virtual test drives on Roarington’s simulators through the eRacing program.
