Those lucky enough to visit Zagato, located just outside Milan in Italy, are immediately struck by the showroom they pass through to reach the offices and ateliers where their special cars are assembled. With just one glance, you get a sense of the stylistic history of this prestigious coachbuilder from the pre-war period to the present day.
The 1960 Aston Martin DB4 GT on display in Zagato’s virtual showroom in Roarington symbolizes the craftsmanship of this coachbuilder, whose rich history commenced over a century ago.
Today, real and virtual meet, and the ability to walk around the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato sheds light on how its aluminium bodywork is engineered for optimal aerodynamic efficiency, while offering an insight into the driving experience, particularly when seated in the cockpit on the classic Zagato snug driving seat and grasping the large steering wheel from the early ‘60s, which was instrumental in reducing driving effort in the absence of modern driving aids, and crucial for decisively and precisely correcting the vehicle’s natural tendency to skid in races.
Like the Aston Martin, other famous models share this approach, including the Alfa Romeo TZ, Abarth Zagato, and Porsche, right up to the Maserati 450S Coupe built for Le Mans and affectionately called ‘The Monster’. This same inventive spirit of Zagato is also captured in the ‘*Elio Z*’ simulator made for Roarington, which shows how lightness can be achieved through the combination of a supporting chassis clothed with lightweight materials.
