Hot Rod: When the Automobile Is Joy

Comparing the Hot Rods of the 1950s to the Pop Art that would follow is an evocative parallel, yet risks being reductive. Pop Art would celebrate the objects of consumer society by transforming them into art. Hot Rods, by contrast, anticipated that vision by starting from the object itself, modifying it until it became something singular. To read them as works of art, one should not look at Hot Rods as artistic representations of the automobile, but rather as objects that represented an era – that of young people, above all Californians, who wanted to put the war and the Great Depression of the 1930s behind them.
