History

Pope Manufacturing Company was founded in Boston in 1876 by Albert Augustus Pope and incorporated in Connecticut in 1877. Initially, the company produced air pistols, cigarette rolling machines, and other patented articles. The company began manufacturing bicycles in 1878 in Hartford and gradually consolidated manufacturing to the Westfield Mass plant. The company later expanded into motorcycles and automobiles. However, it ceased automobile production in 1915 and motorcycle production in 1918. Over the years, the company underwent changes in form, name, and product lines, but bicycles continue to be sold under the Columbia brand.
