Company

Established in 1925 and named after its founder, Walter Chrysler, the Chrysler company is an icon of automobile manufacturing. In the American landscape, Chrysler is one of the “big three” of car vendors responsible for controlling the entire US market.

History

Chrysler is an American automobile manufacturer that was founded in 1925 by Walter Chrysler. The company has had a long and varied history, with many ups and downs, and has been owned by several different companies over the years.

Chrysler's early years were marked by innovation and growth. The company introduced a number of groundbreaking models in the 1920s and 1930s, including the Chrysler Six, Airflow, and Imperial. These vehicles helped establish Chrysler as a major player in the automotive industry.

During World War II, Chrysler played an important role in producing military vehicles and other equipment for the U.S. military. After the war, the company returned to producing civilian automobiles, including the popular Town and Country wagon and the stylish and powerful 300 series.

In the 1960s, Chrysler introduced a number of iconic vehicles, including the Plymouth Barracuda and the Dodge Charger. The company also entered the muscle car market with the introduction of the legendary Plymouth Road Runner and the Dodge Super Bee.

However, by the 1970s, Chrysler was facing serious financial difficulties. In 1979, the company received a government bailout to avoid bankruptcy. This led to the company's partnership with the French automobile manufacturer Peugeot, which resulted in the introduction of a number of new models, including the Chrysler LeBaron and the Dodge Caravan.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Chrysler underwent a number of changes, including the acquisition by the German automobile manufacturer Daimler-Benz in 1998. This partnership proved to be short-lived, however, and in 2007, Chrysler was sold to the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management.

The following year, Chrysler faced another major crisis when the U.S. economy went into recession. The company was once again forced to seek government assistance, and in 2009, it declared bankruptcy. The company emerged from bankruptcy later that year, under the control of the Italian automobile manufacturer Fiat.

Today, Chrysler is part of the Stellantis NV automotive group, which was formed in 2021 as a result of a merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the French automobile manufacturer Groupe PSA. The company produces a wide range of vehicles, including the Chrysler 300, Pacifica, and Voyager, as well as the Dodge Charger and Challenger, and the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.
