Company

The Alvis Car and Engineering Company was a British manufacturing company that produced automobiles, racing cars, aircraft engines, and military vehicles from 1919 to 1967 in Coventry. The company had a reputation for producing high-quality luxury cars, including the Alvis Speed 20 and the Alvis 4.3 Litre, and also built armored cars and military vehicles such as the Saladin armored car and Stalwart amphibious truck. In 1965, the company became a subsidiary of Rover and car manufacturing stopped, but Alvis continued to make armored vehicles. Alvis was later sold to United Scientific Holdings in 1982, which renamed itself Alvis plc.

History

The Alvis Car and Engineering Company was a British manufacturing company in Coventry from 1919 to 1967. It produced high-quality cars and also made aircraft engines and armoured fighting vehicles. The company's success was due to the innovative engine designs of Geoffrey de Freville, who also designed the company's name. Alvis cars were known for their superior performance and luxury, and many were produced with bespoke coachwork. The company also produced successful racing cars. After the Second World War, Alvis added aircraft engine and armoured vehicle divisions to its business.
