Auctions 2021, a genuinely positive balance

The classic car auction market collapsed in 2020 due to the pandemic, but rebounded spectacularly in 2021, surpassing even pre-pandemic levels in terms of total turnover and average prices. This was achieved with a lower number of cars sold, indicating a trend towards higher prices. Online auctions have also become more popular, with lower commissions and attention from previously uninterested buyers. The market for cars priced over one million Euros also saw a significant increase. These trends are detailed in an in-depth analysis in The Key, Top of the Classic Car World 2021.

A Ferrari F50 that was sold for $814,000 in 2011 is now worth over $4 million, while a Porsche Carrera GT sold for $355,100 is now one-third of its current price. The article provides examples of other car models that have greatly increased in value over the past decade.

Pre wars: fixed income investments. Or better

RM and Bonhams recently held auctions dedicated to pre-war automobiles, and both events were successful, selling a high percentage of lots offered and surpassing their initial estimated values. The pre-war market is considered mature and practically immune to bubbles or pandemics, and some models have even appreciated in value. Despite being a niche market, the rarity of these cars makes them difficult to estimate, as demonstrated by the high price difference in some sales.

RM at Paul Ricard. What is the bug?

RM Sotheby’s Guikas Collection auction held at Paul Ricard Circuit witnessed the sale of all 76 cars from the collection; however, 55% of the cars were sold below the minimum estimates, and the average selling price was 12% lower than expected. The Guikas Collection was owned by a French collector and historic car dealer, Jean Guikas, and many of the cars had been in his Marseille showroom for years waiting for buyers. This led to lower sale prices for many cars. Nevertheless, some lots sold for more than the maximum estimates, such as a 1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 "Periscopio" and a 2012 Audi R8 GT3 LMS Ultra. The auction generated a total turnover of over €39 million, with an average value per car of €514,000.
