In the world of classic cars, there are moments that rival the adventures of Indiana Jones, the iconic cinematic archaeologist brought to life by Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg’s films. To put this into perspective, just under a decade ago, a scene unfolded in western France that marked one of the most extraordinary discoveries in recent memory: the resurrection of approximately 60 cars that had been lost for over fifty years. This remarkable collection once belonged to the late businessman Roger Baillon, who was active in the transportation sector during the 1950s. Over the years, he had acquired more than a hundred cars, dreaming of establishing a public museum. However, after his death, the project was abandoned.

1 Incredible discovery in western France: approximately 60 cars belonging to businessman Roger Baillon.

For half a century, Roger's treasure remained hidden and neglected, with these precious cars enduring the passage of time without maintenance or care. Then, one day, the collector's grandchildren were faced with the substantial burden of inheritance tax levied on these considerable assets. They contacted the experts at the Artcurial auction house, which promptly appraised the collection at €15 million. Surprisingly, what had appeared as mere scrap metal turned out to be a remarkable discovery, leaving them quite content with the outcome.

However, it’s crucial to understand why. Among the cars unearthed was the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California once owned by Alain Delon. Badly concealed behind books and stacks of magazines, the car turned out to be the very vehicle driven by the renowned French actor, famously captured behind the wheel alongside Jane Fonda during the filming of "Les Félines" and later with Shirley MacLaine on the picturesque French Riviera. It was sold at the Artcurial auction during Rétromobile in 2015 for €16,288,000. Another exceptionally rare car was one of only four 1956 Maserati A6G 2000 Berlinettas with coachwork by Frua. The price? €1,962,400.

Last but by no means least, there was the 1948 Talbot Lago T26, with coachwork by Saoutchik and formerly part of the Egyptian royal family’s collection, associated with King Farouk and sold for €725,000, despite its dire condition, which called for costly restorations for each of the treasures on offer. Now, you might be wondering about the grand total achieved for the entire collection at auction. Over €50 million! Quite an achievement considering the initial estimate of €15 million. Those fortunate grandchildren must be celebrating this windfall to this day.
