Every year, the Cavallino Classic is held just before Enzo Ferrari’s birthday and it is an event that never fails to surprise. This year, among numerous historic racing cars, the Best in Show was a 1954 735S Monza Scaglietti, still in its Carrera Panamericana livery.
This Ferrari 735S livery is the original one from the 1954 Carrera Panamericana with De Portago behind the wheel
Instead, the Competition Cup went to a 1952 340 Mexico Berlinetta Vignale, also sporting the decorations and racing numbers worn for the famous Carrera Panamericana rally.
Only four examples of the Ferrari 340 Mexico were produced in 1952. Three of them participated in the Carrera Panamericana and were entrusted to Chinetti, Ascari and Villoresi
The winner in the Gran Turismo (Touring) class was one of the many cars Enzo specifically developed for the USA, which was his main market and a crucial source of financial flows for the small, fast-growing Italian manufacturer. We are referring to the Ferrari 340 America Ghia Coupe, specifically a model still painted in its splendid original dark blue.
The 340 with bodywork by Ghia is one of the early Ferrari models designed specifically for the American market
Equally magnificent was a special Pininfarina version of the 250 Europa GT, also looking very refined in dark blue.
What distinguishes the Ferrari 250 Europa GT is the "short block" V12 engine designed by Gioachino Colombo
In the face of such a line-up one can only wonder: could such beautiful cars ever have been built without Enzo Ferrari?
