Vanwall was a motor racing team and racing car constructor that was active in Formula One during the 1950s. The team won the inaugural Constructors' Championship in 1958, and their cars took the first four places in the championship. Vanwall was the first team to win the championship with a British-built car.
The team was founded in 1957 by Tony Vandervell, a wealthy British industrialist and owner of the Thinwall Bearings company. Vanwall constructed four chassis for the 1956 Formula One season, with drivers Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks. The team had a successful debut, with Brooks finishing third in the championship and Moss winning the non-championship BRDC International Trophy race.
In 1957, Vanwall continued to be competitive, but the team's success was overshadowed by the emergence of the dominant Ferrari team. Vanwall won one race, the 1957 British Grand Prix, and finished third in the championship.
The 1958 season saw Vanwall become the first British team to win the Constructors' Championship. The team won four races, with Moss winning a record three of them. The team's success was short-lived, however, as the 1959 season saw Ferrari dominate.
