Company

S.S. Cars was a British manufacturer of sports saloon cars. The company produced the SS 1 from 1934 to 1936 after it bought the shares of Swallow Coachbuilding Limited in 1934. The SS 1 was noted for its apparent value-for-money and its attractive appearance despite not having superb performance numbers.

In September 1935, the company changed its name to SS Jaguar and introduced new models. The business was run and largely owned by William Lyons, who had been a partner with co-founder William Walmsley until Walmsley sold his shareholding in January 1935. The company that owned the business, S. S. Cars Limited, bought the shares of Swallow Coachbuilding Limited in July 1934, and the Swallow company was liquidated before S. S. issued shares to the public in January 1935. The company changed its name to Jaguar Cars Limited in March 1945.
