The Northern Manufacturing Company was founded in 1902 by Charles B. King, Jonathan Maxwell, and William E. Metger in Detroit, Michigan. They produced Brass Era automobiles, with their first car strongly resembling the curved dash Oldsmobile. In 1903, Maxwell left to form the Maxwell-Briscoe Motor Company in Tarrytown, New York. King took over as the chief designer, and the company began offering a two-cylinder touring car and advanced features such as shaft drive and left-hand steering. By 1906, Northern Motor Car Company was introduced with a 30-horsepower four-cylinder touring car, and in 1907, a larger version with a 50 horsepower engine was introduced. The company's model choices were reduced by 1908, but they still offered their original one-cylinder runabout.
