Company

Morris Motors Limited was a British car manufacturer that was established in 1919 and continued the production of WRM Motors Limited vehicles. It quickly became a leading producer of cars in the UK, with its production representing 42% of British car manufacturing by 1926. The company was self-financed and expanded rapidly by buying major and minor components and assembling them in its own factory. The Morris name continued to be used until 1984, when it was phased out in favor of the Austin brand. Morris Oxford vehicles continued to be manufactured in India until 2014, and the Morris trademark is currently owned by the China-based automotive company SAIC. In November 2019, the Morris Commercial JE, an electric van with a 1940s design, was unveiled for a planned launch in 2021 under the re-launched Morris Commercial marque.

History

WRM Motors Ltd was a British car manufacturing company founded by William Morris in 1912. The company's first car, the 2-seat Morris Oxford "Bullnose," was assembled in a factory opened in 1913 in Cowley, Oxford, UK. Morris used a strategy of buying major components and assembling them in his own factory, which allowed him to retain ownership and control with his own capital resources. Despite the outbreak of World War I, the company continued to receive orders and introduced a new larger car, the 2-seat and 4-seat Morris Cowley, in mid-1915.
