The Matheson Motor Car Company was founded by Charles and Frank Matheson in 1903 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company initially produced 7-passenger touring cars with a 24-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The company then moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts, where they continued production of the cars.
In 1906, the Matheson factory was moved to Forty Fort, Pennsylvania, where they developed their famous Silent Six engine. The car gained worldwide recognition after setting a record of completing a mile in just 50 seconds in Atlantic City in 1906.
The company faced financial trouble and entered receivership in 1910, but was reorganized as the Matheson Automobile Company. However, a second receivership occurred in 1912, and the company's assets were sold in 1913.
The Matheson brothers continued to work in the automotive industry, with Frank joining Owen Magnetic Motor Car Company and Charles working for Dodge Brothers, Oakland, and DeSoto, among others.
