The Land Rover started as an off-road capable car model of the Rover Company in the late 1940s. Over time, the brand became established, and the 'Series' indication was added to the model name. The Range Rover was introduced in 1970, and the company became a British Leyland subsidiary in 1978. In the 1980s, the One Ten and Ninety models were given official names, and they were badged as Defender models in 1990 after the introduction of the Discovery model in 1989.
