History

Aptera Motors Corp. is a California-based startup that specializes in solar electric vehicle manufacturing. The company was originally founded in 2006 as "Accelerated Composites," but changed its name to Aptera and gained attention for its three-wheeled car prototype. Despite receiving investment from Google and others, Aptera was unable to secure a government loan and went bankrupt in 2011. The company's intellectual property was later purchased by Chinese automaker Zhejiang Jonway Group, but a plan to manufacture the car in the US never materialized. In 2019, Aptera Motors Corp. was re-formed by the original founders and began a crowdfunding campaign to restart development and production of their concept for an extremely efficient road vehicle.
