Company

The Amphicar Model 770 is a car that can drive on land and in water. It was made in West Germany from 1961 to 1968, with a total of 3,878 manufactured. It was designed by Hans Trippel and was a descendant of the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen. While not particularly fast or high-performing, the Amphicar is unique and fun, and has become an iconic vintage car.

History

The Amphicar was a German-made amphibious passenger car that was produced from 1961 to 1968. A total of 3,878 vehicles were manufactured, with 3,046 imported into the United States. It was the only civilian amphibious passenger car ever mass-produced. The Amphicar is powered by a rear-mounted 4-cylinder Triumph Herald motor producing 43 HP, and all models were convertibles. It has a top speed of 7 MPH on water and 70 MPH on land, hence its designation as the "Model 770". The Amphicar features a two-part transmission, with the front wheels acting as rudders in the water. Production ceased in 1968 due to new US government regulations. Today, the Amphicar remains popular among collectors and enthusiasts and is featured in various media and museums.
