Singer, songwriter, pianist, composer but also a great car enthusiast. Sir Elton John, the artist who has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and has been honoured with five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards and two Globe Awards, seems to have always had a passion for classic cars.
The eclectic artist has owned many cars throughout his life, but his two divorces, particularly the second one, forced him to sell much of his collection. A few days ago, an auction organised by Christie's was concluded, auctioning off the treasures contained in the mega-apartment in Atlanta sold by Sir Elton John at the end of 2023, for a total of no less than 14.4 million dollars. Among the lots, there was only one car, a 1990 Bentley Continental Two Door Convertible, which sold for $441,000.
Here are some of the most iconic cars from Sir Elton John's billionaire garage:
1949 Delahaye 175 Cabriolet
It belonged to the Maharaja of Mysore in India and was bought by Elton John in 1980, reselling it a few years later.
1959 Bentley Continental Sport Saloon
Purchased by Elton John in 1976, the same year as the big hit 'Sorry seems to be the hardest word'.
1960 Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur Sports Saloon
The car was bought in Norfolk in the 1970s by Elton John, making it likely that he was the fourth owner.
1965 Jaguar XKE 4.2-Litre Series I Roadster
Purchased in 1987, which was a bad year for the pianist: He got a divorce from Renate Blauel, while his addiction to alcohol and drugs was worsening.
1985 Bentley Continental Convertible
The Bentley Continental Convertible was featured in the video for Elton John's hit single of the same year, 'Nikita', in which he is seen driving in icy conditions and admiring the eponymous Russian soldier.
1992 Jaguar XJ220
The car was purchased in 1992, the year Sir Elton John topped the US charts with the album 'The One', which sold over 2 million copies.
1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550
The car was delivered to Sir Elton John in 1997, a successful year due to the sales of the single 'Candle in the wind 1997' which sold over 33 million copies worldwide. But also a tragic year due to the untimely death of his close friend, Princess Lady Diana.
