Auctions are like certain refined restaurants that occasionally offer original set menus.

Bonhams at Goodwood Revival attempted a menu with pairings that were not always easy, but with a truly magnificent eastern section. These were Japanese microcars that deserved to be sold as a group, so captivating and well-curated was their presentation.

Why do I speak of set menus? Because the offering was tailored to the on-track event, with one weakness: a couple of headline lots capable of pulling everything else along were missing. As a result, the sale turned into an opportunity for buyers rather than sellers. The cars on offer were far more numerous than in 2025 – 95 against last year’s 71 – with 68 sold compared to 39 previously. Many, however, carried no reserve: 36 against just 4 in 2025, and that brought total turnover to £4,636,685, down 5% on last year.
